Boughton Monchelsea

Boughton Monchelsea is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Canterbury, in the archdeaconry of Canterbury and in the deanery of Sutton.  The church is named for St. Peter with registers commencing 1560.

Boughton Monchelsea, a parish in Maidstone district, Kent;  near the Weald, 4 miles south-by-east of Maidstone, and 4-1/2 miles northwest of Staplehurst rail station.  It has a post office under Staplehurst.  Acres, 2,296.  Real property in 1860, £6,164.  Population in 1861, 1,190.  Houses, 234.  The property is subdivided.

The manor belonged anciently to the Monchelseas of Swanscombe.  Kentish rag is extensively worked.  Remains of a Hyæna were found here, in a fissure, by the late Dr. Buckland.

The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury.  Value, £395 with a habitable glebe house.  Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester.  The church is very good.

There are a national school, and charities £9. ¹
